Background

Jane has been working in urban design and architecture for over 25 years, with a continued passion for creating spaces that improve the well-being of people and planet. Her earliest experiences in architecture practice were specific, inspiring and unique housing projects -  an inner city courtyard house in Surry Hills, Sydney in 2000 with Hill Thalis Architecture + Urban Projects, Sydney and the adaptive reuse design of the heritage listed St John the Baptist convent in Windsor UK in 2001 with John Thompson and Partners, London.

Over time, her interest in where and how people live has grown beyond the building, to look at the spaces and relationships between. She has been the urban design lead for precinct planning, masterplanning for urban centres and new neighbourhoods, adaptive reuse heritage projects, public realm projects, transport and active movement infrastructure strategies and housing at all densities. This vast design experience comes from years of working in both architecture and urban design for and with highly skilled and regarded design professionals in Sydney, London and Manchester. Specifically, Jane has led or supported a range of projects, such as:

  • master planning of new neighbourhoods for Surrey and Greater London councils in the UK;

  • community engagement in Upper Calder Valley, Yorkshire, UK;

  • town regeneration master plans for Morecambe in Lancashire, UK;

  • town centre revitalisation master plans for Maitland and Cobar, NSW;

  • feasbility studies and urban frameworks for Huskisson and Kiama Harbour, NSW;

  • review of National Development Plans for Port Moresby and Lae, PNG; and

  • urban design strategies for the detailed business case for transport infrastructure for Wellington, New Zealand.

Beyond project work, she has a huge interest in design advocacy and policy, developed through work at Government Architect NSW and the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure. In collaboration with the Department she led the development of the adopted design guide, 'Urban Design for Regional NSW: A design guide for creating healthy built environments', and advisory notes to enable good design processes.

Jane is a sessional design tutor, currently with the Integrated Design Studio at the University of NSW in the School of Built Environment.  She is motivated to ensure students have a positive design studio experience that inspires them for their future careers.

Her service offering is strategic and unique - through expertise across many scales, typologies, lens, design outputs, education and advocacy. She is client focused, and can successfully adapt to the changing circumstances and needs.  And her focus on creating a unique design response for place and people, which provides meaning and identity is what drives the quality of her work. At a simple level, she is interested in the human everyday experience, the protection of natural ecosystems and how to ensure comfort for all.
