Identify the need and opportunity

A CLEAR BRIEF

The starting point of any design project is to understand the issue that is to be addressed. What is the objective, and what considerations need to be taken into account? It might be a space which doesn't function successfully or an element which has reached its natural life. Or, if the issue is more complex, a broader plan may be beneficial initially to outline what is required, which specialists and approvals are needed, indicative costs, and steps to get there.

In identifying the issues, it also offers the chance to look at connected opportunities that will enhance and enrich the outcome, and or are logical to address at the same time.

Establishing a detailed and clear brief will help the process, in establishing what is important.

Understand the Place

DETAILED ANALYIS

Good design is specific to its place, responding to the existing good qualities of the natural and built environment. This results in outcomes that will enhance the unique character of a place and further enhance its identity, both natural and cultural.

Understanding the place is undertaken in a number of ways - from many conversations with the relevant people who use the space now or in the future; historical investigations to understand the important aspects of the past which can positively inform the future, and detailed in person analysis of the site and its surrounds. The understandting of the place should consider different factors and conditions which affect times of day, days of week, weeks of a year.

Engage, listen,
collaborate

CLEAR COMMUNICATIONS

The success of a good outcome in any project relies on genuine concern and understanding of the needs of people and environment. Engaging with all those who have a vested interest and deep listening to insights, knowledge and aspirations helps to develop the brief in a way which answers the questions and issues. Engagement is ongoing, forming a strong partnership that provides a shared approach to reaching the objective.

Communication methods are transparent and honest, tailored to suite the client's needs and preferences - whether this be visual or written, traditional or innovative.

Advice on current government priorities and expectations for good design is provided which helps in decision making and stream-lined processes.

Be sustainable and resilient

ENDURING SOLUTIONS

Project solutions have a focus on sustainablity and resilience - economic, environmental and social. For the client and end users, this means an outcome which is functional, fit for purpose, and affordable, with integration of elements and components which allow easy operations and practical maintenance into the future.

For the broader natural environment, this means developing solutions which will help to contribute to preserving the quality of air, water and land.
